Domaine PiqueRoque

Provence, France

Key wines: PiqueRoque VDP rosé, PiqueRoque CDP rosé

The wines made by Englishman Max Hubbard at this beautiful estate in Flassans in the heart of Provence have won several of the highest awards at the most prestigious wine competition in France, the Concours General Agricole. The estate is also listed in the ‘Top 100 Vineyards in Provence’ by wine writer by Ian Parkin.

These are the type of traditional wines that rarely make it to the UK: beautifully made, evocative wines with real character and elegance. The VDP rosé is the archetypal Provençal all-rounder, a delicate, salmon-pink wine with a subtle palate of nectarines, strawberries and summer fruits which works well as an aperitif but is also highly regarded as a good food wine.

The Côtes de Provence rosé offers further levels of refinement, finish and subtlety, with endorsement of its quality coming from a blind tasting run by Harpers in which the wine was commended as one of the best buys in the UK and praised for its ‘lively acidity, generous flavours and long finish’.

Vecchia Cantina

Tuscany, Italy

Key wines: Chianti DOCG, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG

Vecchia Cantina is Tuscany’s oldest wine-making co-operative and today its 400 members tend 1000 hectares of vineyards This historic area has been making prestigious, sought-after wines since the 17th century.

The Cantina is the leading producer of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and their wines garner numerous international awards each year. Their Chianti and Rosso di Toscano both represent superb value given the outstanding quality of both wines.

Waipara West

South Island, New Zealand

Key wines: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir

The wines from Waipara West are made by award-winning winmaker Richard Rowe who is rather Old World in his approach, preferring to craft wines that speak of the terroir. With low yields, the hand-picked grapes offer wines of natural intensity and structure which display the potential to evolve beautifully over a number of years.

One major incentive for customers to include these wines on their lists is the number of awards they have been showered with over the years, both locally and nationally. The vineyard continues to be recognised as one of the very best in New Zealand. Wines of this quality are hard to find and as such Waipara West offers tremendous value for money on wines that are popular with UK wine drinkers.

‘Our wines do require food and although they are often described as more European in style than New Zealand, are typical of our rather untypical vineyard and micro-region.’ Richard Rowe, Winemaker, Waipara West.
